Road Trips

January 17, 2013

The other day was marked in my phone’s calendar as ‘do something amazing day.’ I don’t remember scheduling that day and none of my friends would fess up to (or remember) having done it either, so it’s a bit of a mystery to me how my phone decided to remind me to do something amazing. Happily, Devyn had the day off and we went on quite an adventure!
He decided we needed some delicious brunch from a cafe about an hour outside of town. While he drove, I took pictures of my legs, because you know, I’m a blogger and I was wearing purple tights.

Marlene and Glen’s Dead Fly Diner is my favorite kind of place – no fuss, no frills, a lot like my parents’ cafe with super yummy food and sweet servers who you bet are all part of the family. I brunched it up real good with an egg over easy on my jalapeño burger.

Next, a little wine tasting in a cave of course! The taster gave me waaaaaay too many different kinds of wine to try, including a bunch straight out of the barrel. This little muppet dog came by to check on us every once in a while.

We finished the day with a little blackjack at the local casino and then my honey made me dinner. It was such an amazing day that I didn’t remember until the next morning that it could have been a very bad day. One of my best friends died last year on that day. While I’d much rather have him back, he left me with the message that life is too short. He asked me to make sure I have fun and live well. No matter how it happened, I love that on the day I could have spent crying and moping around, I was too busy living and moving into the future.

Needless to say, a yearly reminder to do something amazing is going into my calendar.

This blog post has two happy trips in it! We just got back from Windsor, a little getaway we planned as our Christmas presents to each other. We thought it would be more fun to make some memories together than to buy stuff. The first night we ate at Kin in downtown Windsor, where we found the best cheese ever. We will be stocking this horseradish + chive havarti in our fridge for the rest of time and we will never get tired of it.

Our resort had a hot tub, and you betcha we didn’t care that it was freezing out.

We’re such grownups. All we bought from the little shops in Windsor was candy. All the candy we wanted!

Our first couple photo on the blog! We’re standing on stone steps that crossed over a fountain. There’s us in the water!

We took a cab into Healdsburg to walk around the town square and do some wine tasting. There are 25+ tasting rooms and we did our best, but only got through a few. It probably didn’t help that the seafood place we stopped for snacks had really yummy cocktails. Vacation means day drinking is okay, right?

Little road trips like these are so good for me. I love breaking out and going new places and trying new things. It makes doing the ‘normal’ stuff back at home more special too. Which is what I’m about to do. Yay, laundry!
